Nepal flash floods kill hundreds; Tamil Nadu ministers coordinate rescue

Devastating flash floods and mudslides in Nepal have resulted in at least 469 deaths and 1,545 injuries. The disaster, triggered by events near the Tibet-Nepal border on August 26, has caused significant casualties across several districts, with Chitwan recording the highest death toll of 178. In the Rasuwa district, authorities have rescued 644 people, though 28 police personnel remain missing.

To coordinate relief for citizens from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, four ministers from the Tamil Nadu cabinet—Aadhav Arjuna, Rajmohan, Vinoth, and Thennarasu—have traveled to New Delhi. They are overseeing a help centre at Tamil Nadu House to liaise with the Indian Union government and the External Affairs Ministry. Efforts are focused on locating 86 pilgrims whose whereabouts remain unknown after their buses were caught in the floods; 20 passengers from one bus have already been rescued.

The Government of Nepal has allocated NPR 25 million for relief efforts. International support has also been pledged, including USD 500,000 from the United States and emergency medical supplies from the World Health Organization.
