Nepal flash floods and humanitarian response

Overview

Devastating flash floods and landslides in Nepal, triggered by torrential rains and the swelling of the Bhotekoshi River, have caused massive destruction and significant loss of life. The death toll has risen to at least 469, with 1,545 injuries reported. Chitwan has recorded the highest mortality rate with 178 deaths. In the Rasuwa district, authorities have rescued 644 people, though 28 police officers remain missing.

Rescue operations by security forces, local authorities, and tourist police continue to face challenges from thick mud, heavy debris, and destroyed roads. The Government of Nepal has allocated NPR 25 million for relief efforts.

International humanitarian aid remains substantial. The United Nations has pledged $2 million for medical kits, clean water, and emergency shelter, while the European Union has allocated €1 million for healthcare, food, and shelter, and activated the Copernicus satellite mapping system. The United States has pledged $500,000 in emergency assistance through Catholic Relief Services for shelter, water, and health services, and the World Health Organization is providing emergency medical supplies.

Efforts are also focused on locating missing pilgrims from India. Four ministers from the Tamil Nadu cabinet have traveled to New Delhi to coordinate with the Indian Union government and the External Affairs Ministry. They are overseeing a help centre to locate 86 pilgrims whose buses were caught in the floods; 20 passengers from one such bus have been rescued. U.S. officials continue to prioritize locating and evacuating approximately 90 affected American citizens.
