Nepal flash floods prompt calls for expanded early warning systems

Climate scientist Tapio Schneider has called for the expansion of early warning systems to include non-rainfall triggers, such as ice and rock collapses. This recommendation follows devastating flash floods in Nepal, triggered by a high-altitude collapse that sent debris through central Nepal, resulting in over 1,200 deaths and thousands of missing persons.

Schneider, a professor at the California Institute of Technology, noted that melting permafrost due to global warming will likely increase the frequency of such events. He emphasized that even a few minutes of warning for downstream populations could save lives.

Beyond technical detection, experts highlight the necessity of effective warning interpretation. During the recent floods in Rasuwa, Nepal, the ability to transform incremental information into decisive action was critical. For example, the principal of Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School successfully evacuated approximately 1,200 students to higher ground before the school was destroyed by the floodwaters.
