Nepal floods and Manaslu avalanches cause mass casualties
Devastating flash floods and avalanches in the Himalayan region have caused significant loss of life and infrastructure in Nepal and China. In the Rasuwa district of Nepal, the death toll has risen to 1,451, with 5,786 people still missing, including 636 foreign nationals. Search and rescue operations involve the Nepal Army, utilizing helicopters and specialized equipment to recover bodies from debris and damaged hydropower tunnels.
The flooding, which originated near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, has also impacted China, where media reports indicate 43 deaths and over 500 people missing. Infrastructure damage is extensive, with significant destruction to roads, bridges, and hydropower projects like the Upper Trishuli-1.
Separately, mountaineering efforts on Mount Manaslu have been marred by tragedy. An avalanche at Camp 3 killed Indian-German climber Dhruba Jyoti Guha and Sherpa guide Fursemba Sherpa. This brings the total fatalities for the current climbing season on the mountain to four. In response to the flooding, the Nepalese government has implemented rehabilitation grants to assist families with housing and livelihood costs.
