Nepal floods: Experts cite lack of early warning systems after 1,000 deaths

Experts and scientists are highlighting the failure of early warning systems following devastating floods in Nepal that caused over 1,000 deaths and left more than 4,000 people missing. The scientific group HiRisk reported that there were clear warning signs of the avalanche and subsequent flooding that affected Nepal and Tibet, but no adequate early warning systems for glacier-related hazards were in place in the affected areas.

In a related development, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research confirmed it declined to fund a specialized early warning system for flash floods in Nepal back in 2022. This system, developed by German scientists at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, utilized a network of seismographs to detect seismic waves from ice and rock falls. Experts suggest that such a system could have provided critical minutes of warning to save lives.

Local aid organizations, such as 'Zukunft für Nepal Ostwürttemberg', are currently working with the Nepalese government to provide emergency relief and supplies to those affected in the mountainous regions.
