Nepal flood and glacier collapse cause massive economic damage
A massive ice-rock avalanche and subsequent flash flood have devastated the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli River corridor in Nepal, causing catastrophic damage to infrastructure and the national economy. The disaster, triggered by a glacier collapse in the Rasuwa District near the Nepal–China border, produced a massive surge of water, mud, and debris that registered a 5.2 seismic signal.
Economic impact estimates vary significantly between reports. One assessment places the damage at approximately Rs 200 billion, noting that the destruction of hydropower projects, transmission lines, roads, bridges, and tourism infrastructure will force the government to redirect development budgets toward reconstruction. Another preliminary report from AccuWeather experts estimates the total economic loss and damage could range between $6 billion and $10 billion, accounting for direct impacts, emergency response, and long-term health and business disruptions.
The flooding has severely impacted several districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading. Experts note that while it is too early to definitively link this specific event to climate change, regional studies indicate rapid glacier mass loss in the area.
