Nepal floods: Thousands missing and massive recovery efforts underway

One month after the devastating flash floods in Nepal, triggered by a glacier and rock collapse on August 26, the humanitarian crisis continues. Official reports indicate that 1,453 bodies have been recovered, while 5,644 people remain missing. The disaster has caused massive infrastructural damage, including the destruction of roads, bridges, and hydropower projects, with reconstruction costs estimated at approximately $4.77 billion.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has addressed the United Nations, characterizing the disaster as a global warning regarding climate risks in the Himalayan region. He has called for increased international support and regional cooperation to address climate-related vulnerabilities.

Humanitarian efforts are ongoing, with Caritas Nepal launching an emergency appeal of over $3 million for long-term rehabilitation and psychosocial support. The impact on children is particularly severe; UNICEF reports that over 32,000 children have been affected, with an estimated 541 separated from their parents or guardians. Search operations continue, particularly in damaged hydropower tunnels, while DNA testing is being utilized to assist in the identification of remains.
