Nepal floods leave over 5,100 people missing
Two weeks after devastating floods and ice avalanches struck northern and central Nepal, over 5,100 people remain missing. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reports that 5,133 individuals are still unaccounted for, including 587 foreign tourists. While authorities have recovered 1,367 bodies, only 102 have been successfully identified.
To assist in the identification process, Nepalese police have collected 2,698 DNA samples. Additionally, authorities are utilizing Face Tagr, an artificial intelligence tool based on deep learning, to match facial data from recovered remains with photos of the missing. The system has already registered over 500 missing persons and identified approximately 90 potential matches, though police noted that the technology cannot identify partial remains.
The disaster, which may have been triggered by a glacier collapse in Tibet, has caused widespread destruction across five districts, including Rasuwa. More than 3,600 people have been displaced and are currently residing in 37 temporary shelters. Rescue efforts face significant challenges due to destroyed infrastructure and the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera.
