Nepal flood survivors face ongoing hardship after deadly glacier collapse
One month after a devastating glacier collapse along the Nepal-China border triggered massive flash floods on August 26, survivors continue to face severe hardship. The disaster, which occurred in the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river corridor, killed approximately 1,450 people and left more than 5,500 missing. Reconstruction costs for the region are estimated at $4.8 billion.
Survivors in areas such as the Rasuwa District are struggling with inadequate living conditions in makeshift shelters. Many, including pregnant women and children, report a lack of privacy, safe sanitation, and reliable housing. Temporary tents often leak during rain, and access to clean water and private bathing facilities remains a significant challenge.
The psychological impact of the disaster is also evident among survivors. Some individuals rescued from the mud report lasting trauma and anxiety triggered by rainfall. Additionally, the floods have caused long-term physical injuries and significant financial instability for families who have lost livelihoods or require ongoing medical treatment.
