Nepal and China border hit by devastating floods and landslides
A massive natural disaster involving an earthquake, avalanche, and subsequent flooding has struck the Rasuwa region near the border of Nepal and China. The Bhote Koshi River has overflowed, destroying bridges, energy infrastructure, and entire villages.
Authorities report that the number of missing persons is approaching 3,000. This includes 291 foreign tourists, 933 hydroelectric workers, and numerous pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash in Tibet. Rescue teams have recovered 633 bodies, and there are concerns that some remains may have been swept downstream toward India.
The Red Cross estimates that the total number of people affected could reach 93,000. Search and rescue operations are being hampered by the risk of secondary floods and the formation of large lakes from ice and mudflows. In Tibet, Chinese authorities temporarily suspended rescue operations in the Jirong area due to dam breach risks, though they later reported that the danger had subsided.
