Nepal faces catastrophic flooding and landslides

Catastrophic flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall and a reported barrier lake breach in Tibet have caused widespread devastation across Nepal. The Bhotekoshi River in the Rasuwa district has seen massive surges, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Preliminary reports indicate hundreds of deaths and many more people missing, with approximately 40,000 individuals displaced from their homes.

Infrastructure damage is extensive, with roads, bridges, schools, and hydroelectric facilities destroyed or severely impacted. Major highways, including the Prithvi, BP, and Mechi highways, face complete blockages or strict nighttime travel restrictions due to mudslides and erosion.

Humanitarian organizations, including UNICEF and World Vision, are mobilizing emergency responses to address acute needs for food, clean water, shelter, and medical care. UNICEF has highlighted the severe impact on children, noting that at least 17,000 are affected and many schools have been destroyed. The global sports community, including major football and cricket clubs, has also expressed solidarity with the affected regions.
