Nepal landslides and floods kill at least 35 people

Nepal is facing a deadly wave of landslides, floods, and avalanches triggered by continuous heavy rainfall since September 24. The death toll from these rain-related disasters has reached at least 35 people, with Baglung district reporting the highest number of fatalities at 12.

In the northern Manang district, an avalanche at the Himlung Himal base camp killed at least 15 Nepali workers who were preparing the site for foreign climbers. One worker remains missing. The disaster has also severely impacted the tourism sector, forcing hundreds of trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit to be evacuated by helicopter from the Manang and Mustang districts.

Infrastructure damage is widespread. The National Disaster Management Authority reports that over 1,900 families have been affected and more than 240 homes have been damaged. Roads, bridges, and buildings have been swept away, and a 40-megawatt hydroelectric plant on the Rahuganga river was damaged. In Myagdi district, local authorities have recommended the area be declared a disaster-hit district following significant loss of life and property.
