Overview

Extreme rainfall and flooding have triggered widespread emergency response efforts across Uttar Pradesh. Initial reports indicated that 37 districts were affected, with 25 districts experiencing active flood impacts. Rescue operations relocated over 19,000 people using more than 2,000 boats, while the administration established over 1,300 shelters and distributed relief kits.

The severe weather, influenced by a cyclonic system and a depression, has resulted in significant fatalities. Recent reports confirm that torrential rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds have caused at least 56 deaths and dozens of injuries over a three-day period. High casualty rates have been noted in districts including Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Bahraich.

Infrastructure and agricultural damage have escalated. Over 1,000 houses have been damaged or destroyed, and at least 107 animals have died. Standing crops, including paddy, sugarcane, and vegetables, have been inundated. The heavy rainfall has also disrupted transportation, affecting train services and causing flight diversions due to low visibility.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for various districts, warning of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall. In response, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed administrative officials to ensure rapid relief operations and provide compensation to affected families and farmers within 24 hours.
