Nepal floods: Canada and UK provide aid as death toll rises

Devastating flash flooding in Nepal, triggered by a massive ice chunk breaking free in the Himalayas, has resulted in at least 579 deaths and left 1,924 people missing.

Canada has pledged 5 million Canadian dollars in humanitarian aid to support rescue operations and has deployed five consular officials to Kathmandu. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed that the whereabouts of 32 Canadians in the region remain unconfirmed.

The United Kingdom is also responding by sending a Rapid Deployment Team to Kathmandu to assist British citizens and their families. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the safety of British nationals is a top priority as the team coordinates with local authorities and the British embassy.
