Nepal floods cause severe disruption to schools and education

Flooding in Nepal has caused significant disruption to the education sector, leaving schools damaged and many students and teachers missing. In the Rasuwa district, a catastrophic flood triggered by a glacial collapse near the China-Nepal border resulted in over 1,400 deaths, with more than 5,000 people still missing. At Neelakantha Secondary School, the community is mourning the loss of 70 students and four teachers.

In Bharatpur Metropolitan City, the National Basic Primary School has been inundated with mud and silt following heavy rains and the flooding of the Narayani River. Teachers and staff are struggling to clean classrooms without external assistance, as local laborers are unavailable. The school has reported recurring flood issues, including structural damage to classroom floors that poses ongoing risks to students.

Government data estimates recovery costs for damaged schools at approximately $15.47 million. UNICEF assessments indicate that learning has been disrupted for more than 14,000 children across 62 schools in the affected regions.
