Nepal floods: Glacier collapse leaves hundreds dead and thousands missing
A catastrophic glacier collapse on August 26 in the Himalayas has triggered devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, at least 600 people have died, with over 2,400 individuals reported missing. The missing include 517 foreign citizens and 933 people linked to hydroelectric projects.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has deployed a crisis unit to Kathmandu to assist three Italian citizens who remain missing. Authorities have advised travelers to avoid high-risk areas, specifically the Gyirong pass in the Shigatse prefecture.
In a related development, a group of 18 travelers from Rimini, Italy, canceled their scheduled trip to Nepal due to the disaster. The travel agency, Ariminum Travel, reported that the airline involved has refused to refund the 35,000 euros in total flight costs or reschedule the travel dates.
