Nepal floods highlight water security and data sharing tensions
Recent devastating floods and rockslides in Nepal have highlighted the growing geopolitical tensions surrounding water security and data transparency in the Himalayas. Following the August disasters, concerns emerged regarding China’s reluctance to share critical hydrological data, such as glacier movements and water levels, which are essential for downstream early-warning systems.
The situation underscores a global trend toward the “weaponization of water,” where states may withhold indispensable environmental data or use water resources for aggressive strategic ends. While some incidents may stem from incompetence or a lack of existing data, the withholding of information in transboundary regions poses a significant challenge to international relations.
For Nepal, these climate-driven disasters serve as a strategic turning point. The nation is being urged to prioritize ecological cooperation, functional early-warning systems, and shared scientific data with neighboring giants. Rather than viewing its position between India and China as a limitation, Nepal is seeking to leverage its location within the transforming South Asian economy to build resilience and create value.
