Nepal floods kill 579 people and leave over 1,900 missing
Severe flooding in Nepal, particularly in the Rasuwa region and areas near the Chinese border, has claimed at least 579 lives. The Nepal National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reports that 1,924 people remain missing, including 517 foreign nationals. Approximately 4,000 people have been rescued so far.
Rescue operations are being conducted by 15,000 security personnel, supported by helicopters. The disaster has caused significant infrastructure damage, destroying dozens of bridges and damaging roads in regions including Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Tanahun, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi. Due to the high number of casualties, local morgues have reached capacity, necessitating the establishment of temporary facilities.
Experts suggest the disaster was triggered by a glacier collapse. The US Geological Survey noted a 5.2 magnitude seismic event in the area, which was identified as the source of the collapse. Additionally, the International Centre for Mountain Development indicated that an avalanche triggered by falling glacier fragments contributed to the flooding. The impact has also been felt in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, where five deaths have been reported.
