Nepal floods leave 500 children in limbo as 1,400 die
Severe flooding in Nepal has resulted in more than 1,400 deaths and left at least 5,000 people missing. The disaster has left over 500 children living in temporary shelters across various flood-affected districts, including Nuwakot, because their parents are either deceased or missing.
These children face significant legal uncertainty. While they are effectively without parental care, Nepali law requires a person to be missing for 12 years before they can be declared dead. Although an exemption exists for disasters, relatives must undergo a judicial declaration of death through a district court to resolve this status.
