Nepal floods leave 626 dead and 1,924 missing
Severe flooding near the Nepal-China border has resulted in at least 626 deaths and left 1,924 people missing. The disaster has caused significant damage to infrastructure, including the destruction of numerous bridges and roads.
Among the missing is Elena Öksüz, a Turkish tour guide who also holds Russian citizenship. According to Selçuk Eracun, President of the Istanbul Chamber of Guides, Öksüz entered Nepal from Tibet on August 8 and was last known to have left her hotel on August 26. Because she used her Russian passport to enter Nepal to utilize visa exemptions, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs was initially unaware of her status. The Association of Turkish Tourist Guides (TUREB) and the Istanbul Chamber of Guides are currently coordinating with her family and the Ministry to locate her.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, supported by helicopters and 15,000 security personnel. Approximately 4,000 people have been rescued from the affected areas. Of the 1,924 missing persons, 517 are reported to be foreign nationals. Some reports suggest a 5.2 magnitude seismic event may have preceded the flooding, potentially contributing to a glacial collapse.
