Nepal floods leave over 2,400 missing after Himalayan disaster
Devastating floods, triggered by a glacier and rock mass collapse in the Himalayas, have caused widespread destruction in Nepal, particularly in the Rasuwa district near the Chinese border. The disaster has impacted 14 hydroelectric projects along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, leaving hundreds of workers and residents missing.
As of the latest reports, the death toll has exceeded 580, and approximately 2,478 people are considered missing. This includes 1,924 people on the Nepalese side and over 550 on the Tibetan side of the border. Among the missing are numerous foreign nationals, including South Korean citizens.
While the Nepalese government has declined offers from several countries—including India, China, the US, and the UK—to provide general search and rescue teams, Foreign Minister Sher Bahadur Thapa stated that the country is seeking specialized international technical assistance. This requested help focuses on complex tasks such as DNA analysis, body identification, and extracting individuals trapped in tunnels or debris.
South Korea has already dispatched a response team and pledged $1 million in humanitarian aid. The disaster has severely damaged infrastructure, including bridges and communication lines, complicating relief efforts in the highly vulnerable mountainous region.
