Nepal floods: Over 600 dead and thousands missing after glacier collapse

Devastating flash floods in Nepal have resulted in more than 600 deaths, with at least 2,426 people reported missing, according to the Nepal Disaster Management Service. The disaster was triggered by a glacier collapse in the Himalayas rather than an earthquake, as confirmed by the United States Geological Survey. The collapse caused massive landslides and debris flows that destroyed homes, roads, and the border crossing between Nepal and Tibet.

In Tibet, three deaths have been reported and over 550 people are missing. Chinese authorities have suspended rescue operations near the Nepal-Tibet border due to fears of a newly formed lake, created by debris blocking a river, which could overflow and cause further flooding.

Among the missing are foreign nationals from India, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Rescue workers are reportedly reaching the limits of their capacity as threats of additional flood waves persist in the affected regions.
