Nepal floods prompt UN calls for global climate justice

Devastating floods in Nepal have prompted United Nations officials to call for increased global solidarity and climate justice. A catastrophic mountain collapse near the China border on August 26 resulted in more than 1,400 deaths and left over 5,000 people missing. Jorge Moreira da Silva, executive director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), described the situation as a “defining moment” for the international community, emphasizing that low-emitting nations should not bear the financial burden of climate-driven disasters alone. Nepal estimates that reconstruction efforts will cost approximately $4.78 billion.

In addition to the August disaster, recent flooding in the Budhi Gandaki river within the Gorkha district has caused further destruction, destroying 200 houses and five bridges. These recurring events highlight the vulnerability of mountain communities to extreme weather and landslides.

As the world prepares for COP31, to be hosted by Türkiye from November 9 to 20, leaders face pressure to turn climate commitments into actionable investment. Initiatives like the Climate Implementation Bridge aim to connect national climate goals with necessary financing to build resilience in highly affected regions.
