Nepal flood recovery: DNA testing used to identify thousands of victims
Following a catastrophic glacial and rock collapse on the Nepal-China border on August 26, recovery efforts are underway for thousands of victims. Disaster authorities have recovered 1,454 bodies, though many are partial remains. Approximately 5,285 people remain missing in Nepal, while Chinese state media reports 43 deaths and 519 missing across the border. The combined death toll is estimated to be nearly 1,500.
Forensic laboratories in Kathmandu are processing thousands of DNA samples to identify the deceased. Experts note that the scale of the task is unprecedented, with some estimates suggesting it could take up to a year to complete the identification process. The search operation has officially transitioned from active rescue to a search and recovery phase, focusing on retrieving remains and assessing damage to infrastructure, including hydropower projects.
Amid the crisis, one Malaysian citizen who was previously reported missing has been found safe and has returned to Malaysia. However, 54 other Malaysians remain uncontactable. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the Nepalese government has committed to cooperating with Malaysia to determine the status of the remaining missing nationals.
