Overview

Following catastrophic flash floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers on August 26, authorities in India and Nepal have launched coordinated DNA profiling efforts to identify missing persons and recovered victims. The disaster, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche on the Nepal-China border, has resulted in a combined death toll of nearly 1,500, with approximately 5,800 people reported missing across Nepal and China.

As of early October, authorities have recovered 1,454 bodies, though many consist only of partial remains. Identification efforts remain slow; only 112 bodies have been identified and returned to families. The process faces significant hurdles due to the scale of the disaster, limited human resources, and the technical difficulty of profiling samples from teeth or bone fragments.

Currently, 3,685 forensic samples are undergoing testing at the National Forensic Science Laboratory and the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Kathmandu. Experts warn that the identification process could take several months to a year. To bolster capacity, an Indian forensic team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Delhi was deployed to assist. International assistance has expanded to include forensic expertise and equipment from China, India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, and the United States.

Previous U.S. aid commitments include $36 million in total, covering bridge construction, humanitarian needs, and the use of drones for disaster recovery. The U.S. continues to assist in the search for approximately 70 Americans reported missing.

Recent updates indicate the operation has officially transitioned from active rescue to a search and recovery phase, focusing on retrieving remains and assessing damage to infrastructure, including hydropower projects. While one Malaysian citizen previously reported missing has been found safe, 54 other Malaysians remain uncontactable. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the Nepalese government has committed to cooperating with Malaysia to determine the status of these missing nationals.
