Nepal disaster: Hundreds dead and thousands missing after massive floods
Nepal is facing a massive humanitarian crisis following catastrophic flooding and landslides triggered by a glacier burst at an altitude of 5,200 meters near the Tibet border. The disaster has caused significant loss of life, with reports indicating death tolls ranging from 579 to 626 people, while thousands remain missing, including hundreds of foreign nationals.
Satellite imagery reveals the scale of the destruction, showing entire areas and infrastructure, such as the Rasuwagadhi hydroelectric plant, submerged or swept away by mud and debris. The disaster has impacted at least 93,000 people, destroyed or damaged dozens of schools, and wiped out approximately 40 kilometers of roads, severely hindering search and rescue operations.
The Nepal Ministry of Finance estimates reconstruction costs between 4 and 5 billion dollars. International aid is mobilizing, with the European Union pledging 2 million euros, the United States providing over 2.5 tons of supplies, Canada contributing 5 million Canadian dollars, and New Zealand providing 1 million NZ dollars through the Red Cross.
