Nepal glacier collapse triggers massive 60 km debris flow
A massive debris flow in Nepal, triggered by a large volume of ice falling from a glacier at approximately 5,200 metres, has caused significant destruction. The material fell into a valley 1,200 metres below, transforming into a debris flow that traveled over 60 km downstream. While initial reports suggested a magnitude 4.4 earthquake caused the event, updated analysis from the US Geological Survey indicates the seismic energy was actually generated by the impact of the collapsing material itself.
Experts from Earth Sciences New Zealand note that while climate change may not be the sole trigger, it is creating conditions that destabilize high-altitude environments. The event highlights the importance of considering cascading hazards in mountain regions.
