Nepal glacier disaster drives climate loss and damage focus at UNGA

The new session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) arrives amid heightened discussions regarding the climate crisis, specifically following a devastating glacier disaster in Nepal. This event has intensified calls from the Global South to secure resources for the Loss and Damage Fund during the upcoming COP31 summit.

Nepal's Foreign Minister, Shisir Khanal, has emphasized that assistance for the nation should not be viewed as aid or charity. This stance comes as the insurance industry estimates annual climate-related losses have reached $171 billion, an increase of $19 billion from the previous year.

Looking ahead to COP31, which involves co-hosting responsibilities between Türkiye and Australia, focus is shifting toward global electrification goals. Türkiye is expected to present an “Action Agenda” featuring ten initiatives and potentially introducing a “Climate Implementation Bridge” to focus on financing pilot projects for electrification. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also expected to address electrification pledges during the UNGA.
