A green house in Nepal’s Nuwakot district has gained international attention, dubbed the ‘miracle house’ after surviving a catastrophic flash flood that destroyed much of its surrounding area. The disaster was triggered by a glacier collapse in the Himalayas near the border of Nepal and Tibet, sending a massive surge of water, mud, and debris through mountain valleys.

The Pyakurel family, who were inside the home, remained trapped for approximately two hours as the floodwaters swept away neighboring buildings, roads, and bridges. While the lower levels of the house were breached, the structural integrity remained intact, allowing the family to survive. Engineers suggest the house's survival is due to its reinforced concrete construction—featuring interconnected columns, beams, and steel-reinforced foundations—and its location on slightly higher ground outside the main debris channel.

The flooding has caused a major humanitarian crisis, with reports indicating over 1,100 deaths and nearly 4,000 people missing. In the Nuwakot district alone, more than 1,200 homes were completely destroyed. Rescuers have managed to save over 11,000 individuals amidst ongoing challenges from rain and damaged infrastructure.
