Nepal hydropower infrastructure devastated by glacial collapse and floods
A massive natural disaster triggered by a glacial collapse near the China-Nepal border has caused catastrophic damage in Nepal, killing over 1,400 people and leaving thousands missing. The event, described as a ‘Himalayan tsunami,’ originated at the Langtang glacier and sent a surge of water, mud, and debris through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.
The disaster has severely impacted Nepal’s energy sector, which relies on hydropower for over 90% of its electricity. Approximately 410 to 430 MW of power has been knocked out of the national grid, and seven hydropower projects were directly hit. Additionally, six projects under construction, with a combined capacity of 508 MW, sustained damage. In response to the crisis, authorities have suspended electricity exports to neighboring countries.
To manage the fallout and prepare for winter demand, the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is implementing several measures. This includes forming a task force to develop alternative power supplies and conducting technical work to transition Kathmandu Valley’s distribution system to underground cables. Scheduled power outages are planned for various parts of Kathmandu between October 1 and October 12 to facilitate these infrastructure improvements.
