Nepal observes national mourning after deadly Bhotekoshi floods

Nepal is observing a national day of mourning following a catastrophic flood and landslide triggered by a glacier collapse on August 26 near the border with China. The disaster, affecting the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river valleys, has resulted in at least 1,380 deaths, with over 5,000 people still reported missing, including 587 foreign tourists from 34 different countries.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with a focus on locating workers trapped in hydropower project tunnels. While four survivors have recently been rescued, including a Chinese national and two hydropower workers, many remain unaccounted for. International assistance is being provided by teams from China, India, and South Korea, while Malaysia has deployed drone-equipped teams. The UN has launched a $50 million appeal to support more than 84,000 affected individuals and warned of potential cholera outbreaks due to the death of 5,000 cattle.

In response to the crisis, the government has announced a Rs 1 billion scholarship program for affected students. Additionally, medical institutions such as Nepal Medical College and National Medical College have donated 7.5 million rupees to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. President Ram Chandra Paudel has called for national unity and urged the international community to take decisive action regarding climate justice and the fragility of the Himalayan environment.
