Nepal Parliament Resumes Amid Budget Debate After Deadlock Over PM's India Border Remarks

The House of Representatives in Kathmandu reconvened on June 11 after a ten‑day obstruction that began on June 1 when opposition parties demanded a correction of Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s statements about the Nepal‑India border. An agreement between the ruling and opposition benches allowed the session to start, with Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal allocating time for the FY 2026/27 budget discussion.

The dispute centered on the Prime Minister’s claim that Nepal had encroached on Indian territory. Opposition leaders insisted that Shah’s signed letter be read aloud, while the government proposed that Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal address the issue. The compromise led to Khanal clarifying the matters related to his recent India visit and bilateral agreements, after which opposition lawmakers expressed their demands for an apology and the removal of the remark from parliamentary records. The Nepali Congress announced it would no longer block parliamentary business over the issue, though other parties voiced reservations.
