Nepal PM Balendra Shah faces flood crisis and parliamentary questioning

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah is facing significant domestic challenges, including a major humanitarian crisis and intense parliamentary scrutiny. Severe flash floods and landslides, potentially triggered by seismic activity, have caused widespread destruction across the Himalayan region. At least 160 people are reported dead, and hundreds of tourists remain missing. The Prime Minister has mobilized military and state resources to assist in rescue operations, particularly in the heavily affected Nuwakot district.

In the legislature, Shah is scheduled to participate in a question-and-answer session with 11 lawmakers. The session will cover critical issues such as nationalism, border security, and government policy. Additionally, the Prime Minister has received medical clearance from the Parliament Secretariat to wear his signature dark sunglasses during sessions, following reports of light sensitivity.

Politically, Shah’s administration is also navigating discussions regarding federalism and long-term electricity trade agreements with India. The government continues to manage the economic pressures of rising fuel costs and fluctuating tourism amidst these natural disasters.
