Nepal cabinet recommends 13 new ambassadors for key diplomatic missions

Nepal's government, led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, has recommended 13 new ambassadors for various diplomatic missions, marking a shift toward merit-based appointments of non-political experts. Key nominees include foreign-policy scholar Dr. Nishchal Nath Pandey for India, economist Dr. Kalyan Raj Sharma for China, and national-security specialist Chiran Jung Thapa for the United States. Other recommendations include former army chief Gaurav Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana for the United Kingdom and policy specialist Sharu Joshi for Germany.

This diplomatic overhaul follows a period of political transition and the recall of previous envoys. The new appointments are expected to undergo parliamentary hearings before being finalized.

Separately, Prime Minister Shah is preparing for his first foreign trip to attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He is scheduled to address the General Debate on September 24. His visit is expected to focus on international support for Nepal following devastating floods in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, which have left over 6,000 people missing.
