Nepal PM urges climate justice at UN following Bhotekoshi flood
Prime Minister Balendra Shah addressed the United Nations General Assembly regarding the Bhotekoshi Trishuli flood in Nepal, framing the disaster as a global warning for climate justice. The flood resulted in at least 1,400 deaths and left thousands missing, with recovery costs estimated at approximately 10 percent of Nepal’s GDP.
Shah highlighted that while Nepal contributes less than 0.1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, it faces disproportionate devastation. The disaster destroyed critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, schools, farmland, and hydropower projects. Shah argued that such catastrophes deplete resources intended for essential public services like healthcare and education.
To address these challenges, the Prime Minister called for accessible, grant-based international assistance rather than loans, citing the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. Nepal has formally requested support from the UN Loss and Damage Fund, which is currently under consideration.
