Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah reignites India-Nepal border dispute

Prime Minister Balendra Shah of Nepal, speaking in his first parliamentary address since taking office, asserted that both Nepal and India have encroached on each other's territory. He cited the disputed western area that includes Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani, urging both sides to examine the facts and resolve the issue amicably.

Shah, the 35‑year‑old leader who previously served as Kathmandu’s mayor, also said Nepal’s lawmakers have reached out to China and the United Kingdom for historical maps to strengthen Nepal’s negotiating position. The remarks revive a long‑standing border contention that dates back to the 1816 Sugauli Treaty and have prompted diplomatic talks in New Delhi involving Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
