Nepal flash floods: Principal saves 900 students from destruction

A devastating flash flood, triggered by a massive landslide from the Langtang Lirung peak, has caused widespread destruction across Nepal and Tibet, resulting in at least 750 to 950 deaths and thousands of people missing.

In Nuwakot, Nepal, school principal Rajendra Dawadi is being hailed for his decisive actions at the Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School. After receiving multiple warnings, Dawadi ordered the immediate evacuation of approximately 900 students present on campus. His quick decision, made just minutes before the floodwaters arrived, saved the lives of the students and most staff, though the school building was completely destroyed. One teacher, Santos Pariyar, was among those killed.

Beyond the school, the disaster has caused massive infrastructure damage, including destroyed bridges and homes. At least 69 schools in the region have been damaged or destroyed, affecting nearly 19,000 children. Rescue operations continue as authorities grapple with the scale of the catastrophe and the threat of further landslides.
