Nepal raises disaster alert as monsoon intensifies with heavy rain forecasts

The monsoon that entered Nepal on June 19 has spread across the country, and meteorologists expect heavier rainfall over the next two days as a low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal drives moist air northward. The Meteorological Forecasting Division warned of moderate rain with thunder, lightning and possible snowfall in higher Himalayan areas across all provinces, urging residents in hilly and Terai regions to stay alert.

In response, the Armed Police Force has established 54 temporary monsoon‑response bases and maintains 16 permanent disaster‑management units, while launching a mobile “Community Alert System” and a 1114 toll‑free hotline for distress calls. The Nepali Army has also gone on high alert, positioning troops, search‑and‑rescue teams, helicopters, Bailey bridges and field hospitals for rapid deployment. Together with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, these measures aim to mitigate floods, landslides and related hazards as the monsoon continues.
