Nepal Reopens Royal Massacre Probe as Foreign Minister Prepares China Visit

Home Minister Sudan Gurung announced that the government will reopen the investigation into the 2001 royal massacre at Kathmandu's Narayanhiti Palace, where King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya, Crown Prince Dipendra and other family members were killed. The original probe had blamed Crown Prince Dipendra, a conclusion many disputed at the time. Gurung made the announcement shortly after being reappointed to the cabinet following earlier allegations of financial irregularities.

Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal is scheduled to travel to Beijing from June 14 to June 17 for meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Liu Haixing, head of the Communist Party's International Department. The visit follows a three‑day trip to India and aims to discuss Nepal's balanced foreign‑policy stance, progress on Belt and Road Initiative projects, and cooperation on connectivity, communication and climate initiatives.
