Nepal seeks climate justice and U.S. investment
Nepal is intensifying its diplomatic efforts regarding climate vulnerability and economic cooperation as it prepares to address the United Nations General Assembly. Prime Minister Balendra Shah has signaled openness to United States investment following discussions with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Megan Bouldin, focusing on tourism, economic cooperation, and climate-related disasters.
Environmental expert Professor Dr. Chhatramani Sharma has emphasized the urgent need for ‘climate justice,’ noting that while Nepal contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, it suffers disproportionately from climate impacts. Sharma highlighted that the effects of climate change are no longer future threats but current realities, citing the devastating floods in Rasuwa’s Bhote Koshi as evidence of rapid environmental shifts.
As Nepal seeks greater access to climate finance, technology, and resilient infrastructure, there is a growing call to transition from humanitarian assistance to long-term economic partnerships. This approach aims to integrate disaster recovery with productive capacity and market access to build lasting resilience against natural disasters.
