Nepal ends search operations after devastating August floods

Nepal has officially suspended non-essential search and rescue operations following the devastating Bhotekoshi-Trishuli flash floods that struck on August 26. The decision, made by the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management under Prime Minister Balendra Shah, marks a transition from emergency rescue to a phase focused on rehabilitation and reconstruction.

The disaster has resulted in at least 1,455 confirmed deaths, while 5,285 people remain missing. The missing include hundreds of foreign nationals, such as 189 Indians, 65 Americans, and 33 Britons. Authorities are currently reviewing legal processes to declare the missing dead to assist families with insurance and banking matters.

Infrastructure damage is extensive, with 12 hydroelectric projects, numerous roads, bridges, and farms destroyed. The government has proposed a budget of 559 billion Nepalese rupees (approximately $3.62 billion) for 504 reconstruction programs. Total recovery and rehabilitation costs are estimated to be nearly $5 billion.
