Nepal-Tibet border flooding leaves hundreds dead and thousands missing

A catastrophic flash flood and landslide event triggered by a glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border has resulted in at least 584 deaths and left more than 2,400 people missing. The disaster has heavily impacted the Rasuwa District in northern Nepal, destroying roads, bridges, and entire villages.

Among the missing are hundreds of foreign nationals, including over 600 international tourists and 90 Americans. Italian authorities have confirmed that three Italian citizens are among those unaccounted for. In the Rasuwa District, more than 100 people remain trapped within the Upper Trishuli Hydropower Project tunnel, though the Nepalese army has successfully rescued 350 individuals from the area.

The disaster was caused by an ice avalanche when a portion of a glacier at approximately 17,000 feet collapsed. This has created two new landslide-dammed lakes upstream, raising fears of further flooding as one basin has begun to overflow. Rescue operations continue amidst difficult weather conditions and damaged telecommunications infrastructure, which has hindered efforts to locate survivors and contact families.
