Nepal tourism faces crisis following deadly floods

Catastrophic floods and landslides in Nepal have severely disrupted the nation’s tourism industry as the peak travel season begins. The disaster, triggered by glacial mountain collapse along the Nepal-Tibet border, has resulted in significant loss of life and infrastructure damage, including the destruction of key highways.

Tourism is a vital economic driver for Nepal, accounting for approximately 8 percent of the country’s gross domestic product and employing over 1 million people. Local business owners, such as tour planners and taxi drivers in Kathmandu and Pokhara, report a massive wave of cancellations. Many travelers are avoiding the region entirely, even in areas not directly affected by the flooding.

The impact on the local economy is profound; some service providers report conducting only a fraction of their usual seasonal business. The disaster has also created a humanitarian crisis, leaving hundreds of children orphaned and prompting national leaders to describe the event as a ‘warning to the world’ regarding Himalayan stability.
