Nepali Congress faces legal and leadership crisis

The Nepali Congress, a major democratic force in Nepal, is facing a significant leadership and legitimacy crisis that has transitioned into a legal battle. The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma, has granted permission to review an earlier verdict regarding the party's internal disputes. This review follows allegations of factual oversights and breaches of natural justice concerning a controversial special general convention.

The legal controversy centers on whether the convention held at Bhrikutimandap met the mandatory requirements of the party constitution. Specifically, it is alleged that 847 delegates withdrew their signatures prior to the gathering, pulling support below the required 25 percent quorum threshold.

On the political front, the dispute has split the party into two primary camps. The establishment, led by Gagan Kumar Thapa, maintains the legitimacy of the special convention. Conversely, a dissident faction, including former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba, is mobilizing supporters. Deuba is scheduled to address a national gathering from August 14–16, signaling a renewed effort by the dissident camp to challenge the existing leadership mandate.
