Nepali Congress holds local-level conventions nationwide
The Nepali Congress (NC) is conducting local-level conventions across Nepal as part of its organizational restructuring process under the 15th General Convention. These conventions aim to establish the party’s leadership structures at the local level.
In Gandaki Province, preparations are complete for conventions in all 85 local units, including one metropolitan city, 26 municipalities, and 58 rural municipalities. In Pokhara Metropolitan City, three candidates—current president Surendra Man Bijukchhe, current secretary Ganesh Bahadur Thapa, and former ward chairman Santosh Paudel—are vying for the presidency. Party officials have stated a preference for consensus-based leadership selection, though healthy competition will occur if consensus cannot be reached.
Under the new party statute, each local unit will elect five office-bearers: a president, two vice presidents (including one woman), a secretary, and a joint secretary. The president will then nominate a treasurer from among the elected members. The new directives also include provisions for inclusive representation, including specific seats for women, youth clusters, and the Dalit community.
