Nepali Congress begins 15th General Convention in Kathmandu

The Nepali Congress has commenced its 15th General Convention in Kathmandu, bringing together approximately 7,500 to 7,700 delegates from across Nepal and abroad. Held at Tundikhel, the convention aims to elect new leadership and establish a new political and organizational roadmap under the slogan ‘New Congress, New Resolve’.

Party President Gagan Thapa has proposed significant reforms in his political report, advocating for a complete overhaul of the party’s political culture, ideology, and economic policies. The report seeks to address the party’s perceived distance from the public by focusing on good governance, justice, and equality. Thapa also proposed the establishment of a ‘shadow government’ at federal and provincial levels to monitor government activities and offer alternative policies.

To maintain a dignified and economical atmosphere following recent national disasters, the party has banned all physical campaign materials, such as banners, posters, and pamphlets, permitting only digital and technology-based campaigning. While the party is covering accommodation for international guests, domestic delegates are responsible for their own lodging. The convention includes sessions to strengthen internal democracy and increase representation for younger generations and professional groups.
