Nepali Congress 15th General Convention concludes

Overview

The Nepali Congress has concluded its 15th General Convention in Kathmandu, which brought together approximately 7,500 to 7,700 delegates. Held at Tundikhel under the slogan ‘New Congress, New Resolve’, the convention focused on electing new leadership and establishing a new organizational roadmap.

In the leadership elections, Gagan Thapa secured the party presidency with 6,584 votes, representing 88 percent of the 7,013 votes cast. Other key election results include:

• General Secretary: Pradip Paudel won the open category, while Dila Sangroula was elected as the women’s general secretary. • Vice-Presidents: Binod Chaudhary was elected under the inclusive category; Chandra Kant Bhandari and Madhu Acharya won in the open category, and Pushpa Bhusal was elected for the women’s position. • Senior Vice-President: Bishwa Prakash Sharma was elected unopposed.

Prior to the elections, President Thapa introduced a political report advocating for reforms to the party’s ideology, economic policies, and political culture. His proposals included the creation of a ‘shadow government’ at both federal and provincial levels to monitor government actions. To maintain a dignified atmosphere following recent national disasters, the party also implemented a ban on physical campaign materials, restricting campaigning to digital and technological platforms.
