Neptune: Scientists explore the distant planet's characteristics

Scientists describe Neptune as an ‘impossible world,’ characterized by a daunting and somber environment. As the eighth and most distant planet from the Sun following Pluto's reclassification as a dwarf planet, Neptune holds a unique place in astronomical history.

Neptune was the first planet discovered through mathematical calculations rather than direct observation. While Galileo Galilei observed the celestial body in 1612, he mistakenly identified it as a star. The planet's existence was later predicted by analyzing the irregular orbital motion of Uranus. In 1846, French astronomer Urbain Le Verrier calculated the planet's location and reported his findings to German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle, leading to its confirmation by the Berlin Observatory. Additionally, British mathematician John Adams had previously calculated the planet's existence, though his findings were initially overlooked by the director of the Cambridge Observatory.
