Netanyahu calls for national unity government in Israel
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for the formation of a broad national unity government, urging political parties to prioritize national unity over partisan divisions. Following the October 27 elections, which left no single bloc with a clear majority in the Knesset, Netanyahu expressed opposition to forming a coalition that relies on support from Arab parties, whom he accused of supporting terrorism and undermining the state's Zionist identity.
Netanyahu stated that a wide government including the National Camp and Zionist parties represents the "will of the people" and is a necessity for addressing current security and political challenges. He specifically argued that such a government would be better equipped to address the Iranian nuclear threat and maintain Israel as a Jewish state.
The political landscape remains uncertain. Former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yesh Atid party, has been conducting consultations to form an emergency national government and reported progress in negotiations with his partners. Reports indicate that Eisenkot received support from 67 out of 120 MKs during consultations, while 46 supported Netanyahu.
President Isaac Herzog is expected to announce his choice for the person tasked with forming a government on Sunday. The designated individual will have 28 days to form a coalition, with a possible 14-day extension.
