Netanyahu proposes settlement expansion in Galilee and Negev
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to expand Jewish towns and farms in the Galilee and Negev regions. He framed this expansion as a necessary step to ensure a ‘Jewish majority’ and warned that his political opponents might lead to the establishment of ‘Arab autonomy’ in these areas if his camp loses the upcoming elections.
This demographic strategy aligns with efforts by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to advance settlement projects. Meanwhile, Palestinian residents in these regions continue to face challenges regarding building permits and land ownership.
In tandem with these domestic policy shifts, Netanyahu and his allies have increased security rhetoric, warning of potential attacks on Israel ahead of the scheduled October 27 elections. Opposition leader Yair Lapid has questioned the severity of these warnings, noting that intelligence does not point to a specific imminent threat. Critics suggest the focus on security may be an attempt to divert public attention from government accountability regarding the October 7 failures and the rising cost of living, which remains a primary concern for voters.
